April: Sexual Assault Awareness Month

The month of April is Sexual Assault Awareness Month. As we know there have been bands that have been accused of mistreating their fans in a way that is never acceptable. This post isn’t about the accused but about those victims.

Netflix has released the heavily anticipated 13 Reasons Why original series produced by Selena Gomez. Without giving too much away there are scenes within this series that talk about how traumatic anyone who has survived sexual assault/harassment can be. Take the time to educate yourself and know the available resources. An organization that is very helpful is A Voice for the Innocent. This is a non profit organization where you can voice your story anonymously if you wish as well as be provided with resources.

I would like to share a story that is far too common. I am an avid concert goer. I crowd surf, get in the pit and am also a photographer. I was walking through the crowd to head to the open beyond the barrier to take photos of the next band and someone grabbed my butt. Like, I’m talking handful and a squeeze. I turned around quickly to see if I could see who it was but no one stood out to me. That situation is one occurrence of what can happen at shows or anywhere really.

I never told anyone the above had happened because I figured no one would have cared or could do anything. However, I have seen a lot of people act on behalf of those who have been in an uncomfortable situation. I’ve seen musicians stop shows and warn the crowd of their behavior and that it won’t be tolerated.

Check out this video of Aaron Lewis of Staind stopping a concert due to a teenage girl crowdsurfing and being inappropriately touched.
