Album Review: Self Titled Album Edge of Free

EdgeOfFree_2017_Press1.jpg

May 24th, 2017-Rock music has always been an outlet for me to cope with my mental health such as depression and anxiety. “Edge of Free” is a band that has no shortness of using rock music to deal with similar issues. Their new self-titled album talks about all the heavy shit that the band has been through together which was similar to what the guitarists Hussey said during an interview.

“Edge of Free” touches on a little bit of everything throughout this album such as depression, drug addiction and recovery. What makes this band unique is they are known to be an acoustic-rock band. I didn’t even know acoustic-rock was even a thing! It also makes sense that their band is from Nashville. Once I listened to their single “Pony” I could hear the Nashville inspiration with the way the singer sings with a little bit of a country twang and noticing that there was only acoustics and no electric guitars. But don’t be fooled by the acoustics because the singers voice adds a rusty and rock and roll sound throughout the whole album. There also singing about deep life experiences that won’t be songs usually praised on the top 100 country hits. The song “Pushin The Needle” is I feel like more about the bands struggles with drug addiction. You can really hear and even feel the singers voice go higher and yell louder in the chorus of the song. When I was listening to it I could defiantly feel his emotions through the speakers and how frustrated he meant to sound while singing this song. On a brighter note the song “In My Time” is about in my perspective the end of the bands drugs addiction and the start of a healthier life. This album is very deep and I recommend it to anyone who has experienced addiction, anxiety or depression at some point of their life which should be almost everyone.

Three Bands To Check Out at SXSW 2017:

Lets Eat Grandma-
Indie rock at it’s finest, UK band Let’s Eat Grandma is my top band to catch this year based off one thing. Their voice. Subtle yet edgy, this band surely knows how play music. A fresh and uncommon sound that will surely make your SXSW experience fantastic.

Skinny Girl Diet-
Two words, girl punk. Skinny Girl Diet restored my faith in punk music, especially girl punk. Gritty and true to what punk stands for ( or doesn’t) this band is a hoot to listen to. Check out the music video for their song ‘Silver Spoons’!

Dream Wife-
Indie rock with pop note this all girl band it already carving their own corner of the industry. With a different sound the band knows the formula to pumping out great jams. Check out my favorite song by them, ‘Hey Heartbreaker’!

The Grievance Club Releases New Music Video!

tgc

The Grievance Club a four piece rock band out of Kent, Ohio just released a new music video for their song “In Color & Tone.” The band consists of Kevin Cappy (vocals/bass), Harrison Mills (vocals/guitar), Steve Perrino (guitar) and Dan Roberts on drums. The Grievance Club is one of those bands that can easily play a house show and throw down but as well as play a wedding and win you over with their vocals and meaningful lyrics. They’re one of those bands that can play a range of shows whether its rock or metal.

Check out their music video and lyrics below!

Lyrics:
Lost grip of all my vices;
my fingers twisted pinching the thread.
The colors turn and sway inside my eyes,
No balance to be found ahead.

So you can crack the shell
Strip the skin
and waste away…
Way beyond the shoreline, find me at the bottom
grasping tightly for the tide.

Strip away the skin
Shed the rot within
the bones,
Amend and start again.

I’ll draw mountains if you pull the waves.
I’ll find a way to measure life beyond the ways that I sway
through cyclical days.

And in the cold of a winter’s day,
I hear them speak in such clichés.
I see them bury their flasks and put salt in the gash,
and make amends with their enemies.
Because I know what I deserve, but I forgot the golden rule.
Our sights set on the safer things,
it’s a symptom of security, the common fool.

Sleeping in until the winter sun goes down.
Color days in monotone.

Hold me over
Don’t let me under the waves.
Hold me over, so you can settle the sway.

Erase the gray
Color me in tone.
Settle the sway.
Color me in.

Sheevaa Releases EP called The Five Stages of Grief

There is no one out there who can match the uniqueness and skill that the nu metal/Eastern melody band Sheevaa does. Founded on April 20th, 2013, Sheevaa consists of lead singer Akash Hans, bassist Roberto Arturo and Drummer Pete Dornowski. These group of gentlemen have brought a whole new outlook on nu metal. Not only are they amazing on paper but they are remarkable live. The fans of Sheevaa have been anticipating an EP from Sheevaa for some time and after the band decided this was the perfect time we have officially gotten our wish.

The Five Stages of Grief explores the mind, body and soul. Tracks titled Denial, Anger, Bargaining, Depression and Acceptance follow the stages we experience when we lose a loved one. Each song incorporates breakdowns, vocal changes, amazing guitar riffs and of course bass drops. The most notable aspect of Sheevaa is Akash’s vocal style. You can almost see the emotions and pain he feels as the EP goes through each stage. We look forward to hearing more from Sheevaa in the near future. Tour announcements soon. fivestages
